OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has just launched a free web-based tool with a brand-new feature dubbed as an “AI Text Classifier” that will assist educators and others in determining if a specific passage of text was produced by a human or a bot.
Jan Leike, the head of the alignment at OpenAI, cautioned that the new tool shouldn’t be used in isolation to determine the authorship of a document: “It has both false positives and false negatives.”
The Challenge for OpenAI
Plagiarism detection via ChatGPT may be difficult for several reasons, according to Jan Leike. Text can be edited by users, for instance, to prevent the tool from identifying them.
Additionally, the business claimed that it is hard to tell whether predictable material, like a list of the first 1,000 prime numbers, was generated by AI or a human because the solution is always the same. On short texts with fewer than 1,000 characters, the classifier is also “extremely unreliable.”
The programme analyses English AI-generated text and divides input into several groups using a machine learning algorithm. When a body of text, like an essay for school, is pasted into the new tool, it will provide one of five outcomes, ranging from “likely generated by AI” to “very unlikely.”
It performs noticeably lower in other languages and works best with text samples longer than 1,000 characters. Additionally, it is futile to differentiate between AI and human-written code.
Prassidh Chakraborty, a subordinate representative for OpenAI, said that the company created the program to help reduce false claims that content produced by AI was written by a human. The Bigger Picture
“As with the use of AI for any form of assessment, we caution against utilizing this tool solely because we know that it will occasionally be inaccurate. We are emphasizing how crucial it is to keep a person in the loop and that it’s just one data point among many others.” Director of policy research at OpenAI, Lama Ahmad.
Students and teachers are already prohibited from using ChatGPT on the district’s networks and devices in public schools in Seattle and New York City. Even while it’s still unclear how frequently students are using ChatGPT and how detrimental it might be to learning, some professors are moving quickly to reevaluate their assignments in response.
In response to user queries, OpenAI ChatGPT has been used to produce creative articles, stories, and song lyrics. Some scientists have been fooled by the study abstracts it has produced. It even recently completed exams for four courses in law at the University of Minnesota, another exam at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a test for US medical licenses.
Experts are also concerned about the surge in false information produced by OpenAI and the possibility of impostor bots.
Similar technologies to identify AI-generated content are being developed by a variety of other businesses, groups, and people, notably GPTZeroX.
Tools to help teachers spot when assignments are created by the tool are actively being developed by companies like Turnitin. According to Princeton University student Edward Tuan, more than 95,000 people have already tried the beta version of his ChatGPT detection technology, called ZeroGPT. He noted that teachers have shown an “amazing demand” for the feature thus far.
Ahmad stated, “Our primary goal is to help instructors become better prepared to employ these models in and out of the classroom because we are well aware that we are not educators, helping them understand the capabilities and the limitations, and then secondary through them, equipping students to navigate the complexities that AI is already introducing in the world.”
