6 Chinese Firms Added In US Blacklist
On Friday, the Biden administration added six Chinese organizations linked to Beijing’s alleged surveillance balloon program to a list of prohibited exports. The five businesses and one research center were included, according to the Commerce Department, in order to help “China’s military modernization efforts, particularly the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aerospace programs, including airships and balloons.”

Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation’s 48th Research Institute are two of the organizations. Targeted companies find it challenging to acquire U.S. tech exports after being included on the entity list. The presidents of the United States, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, have utilized the list to punish Chinese businesses and prevent Beijing from expanding militarily.
The designations were made following last week’s identification of the purported Chinese spy balloon over Montana, which was shot down off the coast of South Carolina after it crossed the US. According to China, the balloon was a weather-monitoring gadget that veered off track, and the US has been accused of exaggerating the incident. The alleged spying episode, according to President Joe Biden, did not significantly harm US-China relations, but it was an infringement on US sovereignty, and the US would defend its national security against such threats.
Republicans in Congress have criticized him for allowing the balloon to travel across the US mainland for a week before being shot down last Saturday. Based on unnamed defense and intelligence sources, The Washington Post stated that the surveillance balloon program had been gathering data on military equipment in nations of strategic relevance to China for several years, partially operating from Hainan province in China.
A trip to Beijing by the secretary of state was among the diplomatic gestures the administration used to express its ire. Republicans had criticized the administration for its lack of a stronger response, including failing to shoot the balloon down before it sailed out to sea. The Pentagon warned against using the material near people on the ground, and the White House said it was acting on their recommendations.
The balloon was a civilian weather monitoring gadget, according to the Chinese government, which has attempted to downplay the tragedy. According to the report, at least four balloon sightings have occurred recently over Hawaii, Florida, Texas, and Guam, with three of those occurrences occurring during the tenure of President Trump but only recently being determined to be Chinese surveillance airships in three of the cases.

The six companies were identified as Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology Co., China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 48th Research Institute, Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology Co., Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co., Guangzhou Tian-Hai-Xiang Aviation Technology Co., Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co. Following the first face-to-face summit between President Biden and Xi, the balloon incident happened as the US and China were working to strengthen their relationship. But following the ballooning controversy, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a scheduled trip to Beijing for negotiations.
