Brazil Rainfall: According to a statement from the Sao Paulo state government, 35 people perished in Sao Sebastiao, while a 7-year-old girl died in nearby Ubatuba due to rain.

Sao Paulo Rainfall
According to authorities, heavy rain in Brazil’s northwestern Sao Paulo state caused flooding and landslides that killed 36 people and could kill more.
35 people perished in Sao Sebastiao, according to a statement from the state administration of Sao Paulo, while a 7-year-old girl was also slain in nearby Ubatuba.
As rescue teams work to locate the missing, injured, and people thought to be dead in the wreckage, the cities of Sao Sebastiao, Ubatuba, Ilhabela, and Bertioga—some of the hardest hit and currently under a state of calamity—cancelled their Carnival celebrations.
Felipe Augusto, the mayor of Sao Sebastiao, remarked, “Our rescue crews are not managing to reach various sites; it is a chaotic scenario.” Later, he said that 50 houses in the city had collapsed as a result of the landslides and that there were dozens of people still missing.
Many videos of the extensive damage in Augusto’s city were shared on social media, including one showing a newborn being saved by residents waiting in line on a street covered in water.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, said on Twitter that he would travel to the area on Monday.
The Sao Paulo state administration said that the area received more than 600 millimeters (23.6 inches) of precipitation in a single day, one of the greatest totals ever recorded in Brazil for such a brief period. According to the state government, Bertioga had 687 millimeters on its own during that time. The army responded to a request from governor Tarcisio de Freitas for assistance by dispatching two aircraft and rescue crews to the area. In TV images, only the roofs of flooded homes were visible. Small boats are being used by locals to transport people and objects to higher ground. Landslides and flooding closed a road that connects Rio de Janeiro to the port city of Santos.
Rich tourists who prefer to avoid the chaotic street celebrations in big cities frequently travel to Sao Paulo state’s northern shore during Carnival.
