American drama series The Idol has been in controversy since its first teaser came out. According to Variety, it has been allegedly heard that the controversial show is in talks to be premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May. The Weekend, who is a co-creator of the show has been to Cannes Film Festival and is expecting and hoping to get his show premiered there. The festival has not yet screened the show. The show has undergone many changes due to inappropriate scenes depicting unethical actions.
Many other TV shows and series like Top Of The Lake: China Doll and Twin Peaks: The Return have also made it to the film festival in the past. HBO has released three different trailers for The Idol but the release date is yet to be decided. Due to the consistent controversy and drama, the screening date isn’t confirmed.
Controversy related to the series
In April 2022, Amy Seimetz, the director of the show suddenly left the show in between after a few episodes being shot. Later the show was directed by Sam Levinson. According to the American magazine, Rolling Stone, the series is getting a lot of backlash for some scenes that directly or indirectly glorify sexual violence and violence in general against women. However, according to the sources, it is said that the series depicts a female perspective with Lily Rose Depp in the lead role.

The Weekend replies to these allegations by posting a clip from the series on his Instagram page. The clip shows him rejecting an offer from Rolling Stone. Where most of the reports have been against the director, Sam Levinson, Lily-Rose Depp spoke in his defense. Depp said that Levinson has always been very supportive and comforting throughout the filming of the show and has kept everybody’s perspective in mind.
