A high number of casualties were reported with Ukraine claiming that a 1100 of Russian forces have been killed in the last few days. On the other hand, the Russians state that in the last 24 hours itself, 220 Ukrainians have lost their lives and several others are said to be injured on both the sides.
While the eastern Ukrainian city by itself does not hold much value to Russia, it will still be a small victory for Russia as they struggle to go on with their operation. The purpose of the battle in Bakhmut is to inch closer towards their mission to occupy the entire Donetsk region. It is One of the four territories in eastern and southern Ukraine that Russia annexed last September as a result of referendums that were widely viewed as fraudulent outside of Russia.
According to the latest update from Ukraine, offensive actions by Russian forces have resumed in the region. As per the report, 49 rocket attacks, eight airstrikes, and three missile attacks—including one on civilian infrastructure in Solvyansk—had been carried out by Russian forces.
What does Russia want?
Even though the Russian invasion of Ukraine took place in February 2022, this conflict between both the countries began in 2014.

It started in 2013 when huge protests erupted in Ukraine over the then President Yanukovych’s abrupt decision to forgo signing a political association and free trade deal with the European Union (EU) in favor of tighter connections to Russia instead.
Following this was the Donbas War, in which Russia fought alongside pro-Russian separatists against the Ukrainian military and annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
On 24 February, when Russian forces barged into Ukraine, Putin announced that this was a special military operation. He stated the purpose of this operation was to de-militarize Ukraine. He was also against NATO from gaining a foothold in Ukraine, as he wanted Ukraine to have a neutral status.
One month into the invasion, Putin faced a hitch in his plan as he had to pullback his troops from Kyiv and Chernihiv. As his initial target could not be fulfilled, he focused on a new one henceforth. His aim since then has been to liberate Donbas which constitutes the two Ukrainian industrial districts in the east of Luhansk and Donetsk.
The result of the war so far (Russia vs Ukraine) –
The consequences of the invasion have not been as favorable as Putin assumed it would be towards Russia.

A crucial win for the Zelensky was when they retook Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, from Russian troops in September 2022.
A big accomplishment for Putin is the construction of a bridge between Crimea and the Russian border. Prior to this bridge, Crimea used to depend on its bridge across the Kerch Sea.
Regardless, the biggest loss in the war should be seen as the death of tens of thousands of people as a result of the invasion. This has also sparked the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II. By June, about 8 million Ukrainians were internally displaced, and by February 2023, more than 8 million had left the nation.
