No Script, No Problem: The Strike’s Impact
This year’s Tony Awards faced potential cancellation due to the Writers Guild of America strike. However, an agreement was reached with the union, allowing the show to proceed without a script.
Playwrights rallied together to save the telecast, ensuring the event would continue. As a result, the ceremony will forgo a custom-made opening number, and presenters and hosts will be unscripted. To address this, writers were encouraged to pre-record their acceptance speeches.
Ariana Debose Returns as Host
For the second consecutive year, Ariana DeBose will take the stage as the host of the Tony Awards. Opening the night, DeBose explained the strike’s impact and informed the audience that every presenter and host would be unscripted for the evening.
