A helicopter from the sheriff’s department in South Carolina crashed at Charleston International Airport on Tuesday, leaving non-life threatening wounds on the Pilot. Commercial Flights were suspended for two hours post the crash.
The Sheriff Department’s helicopter crashed at Charleston International Airport on Tuesday. The pilot sustained non-life threatening injuries and has been taken to a local hospital(Medical University of South Carolina).Reportedly, flights were declared to be halted at 3:45PM by a social media post on the airport’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. The crew was at the scene immediately as posted by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Department.
After about 2 hours, i.e. 5:30 PM, Charleston Airport informed that the services had resumed and one of the runways had become operational. The crash had occurred at the South Aviation Avenue side of the airport- which is diagonal to the airport’s terminal. This is South Carolina’s busiest airport and all suspensions were lifted by 5:30PM and all inbound flights were halted at their place of origin until 6 PM, local time.

Elliot Summey. Charleston County Aviation Authority Executive Director proclaimed that the pilot had already estimated a possible crash and managed the aircraft mid-airfield before the final crash. He also told WCIV-TV that the helicopter is currently in “shambles”. The Sheriff’s office also confirmed that there were no co-passengers on the helicopter and the pilot was the only one injured . The injuries endured by the pilot are not life threatening.
It is also being said by the Office that a malfunction was reported by the pilot, moments before the final crash (by the pilot). This issue is being overlooked thoroughly by the National Transportation Safety Board. The Sheriff’s subordinates stayed at the site of the crash on Tuesday night to assess and supervise the investigation. They would also document the entire incident.
A video released from the site shows multiple emergency services present at the airport on the tarmac next to the wreckage. The Fire Department arrived urgently at the airport. Two US Air Force Department vans were also spotted in the video.
Charleston International Airport is a civil and military airport, managed by the Charleston County Aviation Authority in purview of a joint-use deal with the Joint Base Charleston. The helicopter has been reported to return from Sumter- a place for Charleston County Sheriff’s maintenance booth, shared by a law enforcement source to ABC News 4.
