Helped to found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1957.

Gave his famous  "I Have a Dream" speech , 1963.

Received the Nobel Peace Prize, 1964.

Assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee.

His death led to widespread riots across the United States.

Posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day became an official federal holiday in 1986.

His birthday, January 15th, is observed as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States.
