2023 is going to end within a week now. Small changes in habits can make a big impact in the long run. This year instead of making resolutions, make healthy habits and break those old unhealthy ones. It’s said that first we make our habits then our habits make us. Healthy habits can lead to healthy lifestyle can improve our productivity and mental health.

Here are 5+1 habits to avoid and break while you enter 2024 for a healthy mind and body

1. High Screentime

With the age of smartphones and gadgets, the time an individual spends in front of the screen is insane. Long hours of mindless scrolling on social media platforms or watching movies and series continuously can not just drain your gadget’s battery but can also affect your physical and mental health with the passage of your meaningful time which can be used in a much more productive way. Long screen time can lead to headaches, sore eyes, blurred vision, and sleep deprivation. These hours can be utilized to do some reactional activities that can refresh your mind and body.

2. Midnight Munching

Late-night munching is a very common habit of individuals who stay up late. This habit in the beginning may feel like fun but it can create a long list of issues in the long run. Midnight eating can lead to obesity, digestion-related issues, and improper sleep. Unhealthy eating patterns can disturb your overall body cycle and can even affect your mental and hormonal health. Instead, go for regular meals at the same time every day and it is advisable to have your last meal of the day at least three hours before you go to bed.

3. Less physical activity

With hectic schedules and fast lifestyles, individuals do not give much attention to their bodies and forget to indulge in some good physically exhausting activities. A good amount of physical activities in the form of long walks, playing some sport, dancing or workouts can help you to keep the flexibility and stamina of your body maintained. Lack of physical activity can lead to unhealthy weight gain, cardiovascular diseases, and even sleep deprivation. Engaging in physical activity can rejuvenate a person not just physically but emotionally.

4. High Caffeine intake

Tea and Coffee are commonly consumed by all the people in their regular lives as beverages. Caffeine can help to uplift one’s mood, metabolism, and physical and mental performance. However excess consumption of caffeine can lead to insomnia, high blood pressure, muscle breakdowns, upset stomach, and can lead to addiction. High caffeine intake can also lead to adrenaline rush and this may lead to trigger anxiety and nervousness.

5. Not drinking enough water

Our body is made up of 60-70% of water. Water is an essential element in your daily diet to maintain your internal body temperature and aids in digestion. Doctors suggest drinking 7-8 glasses of water every day. It also helps to remove toxins.  Not drinking a good amount of water can lead to constipation, dull skin, dehydration and weakness, and even fatigue. Develop a habit of drinking water at regular intervals.

6. Lack of proper sleep

6-8 hours of good sleep is essential for a person to relax and recover his/her body and mind. Without sleep, our bodies and minds can’t function properly. Caffeine intake, unhealthy eating habits, overthinking, and high screen time can lead to difficulty in sleep. Lack of sleep can collapse an individual’s cognitive skills and can lead to stress and fatigue. Making a schedule of sleeping at the same time every day and avoiding any screens one hour before can improve the quality of your sleep. Good sleep can make you wake up all fresh and ready for the next day and reduce the problem of sleep deprivation.

So take steps towards a healthy and happy you in this upcoming year and unleash your underlying potential.
