Young, Latham and Ravindra prove their worth in the ICC CWC 2023

ICC CWC 2023 contested its match 6 of the ODI World Cup in Hyderabad on Monday, New Zealand easily defeated Netherlands by 99 runs. It was just another (extra)ordinary day at the office for New Zealand

After being given the opportunity to bat, New Zealand got off to a fairly slow start. Aryan Dutt and Ryan Klein bowled the first three overs, all of which were consecutive maidens, until Will Young got a few boundaries in the fourth.

Although almost all of the New Zealand bats provided some crucial runs, big-hitters Glenn Phillips (4) and Mark Chapman (5) had a forgettable outing.

Will Young (70), Rachin Ravindra (51), and captain Tom Latham (53) shone out for the Black Caps, demonstrating that they are capable of playing without Kane Williamson, who was forced to sit out for the second straight game owing to lack of match fitness.

In contrast to the previous game, where Ravindra went all-out early in his bat, he was more circumspect on Monday.

Following Devon Conway’s dismissal, Ravindra entered the field in the 13th over. He initially faced Roelef van der Merwe and Colin Ackermann with ones and twos. Only in the 21st over did he finally score his first boundary of the game, punishing Bas de Leede’s full toss with a slotted boundary between short third man and point.

Ravindra hit Ackermann for a six over long on in the 24th over, playing with complete freedom to swing it over the boundary lines. It was a déjà vu moment for him.

The middle overs had seen a decline in runs, and it took New Zealand till the middle of the 20th over to reach their century. However, the Kiwis had plenty of wickets in hand and all the time in the world to achieve a difficult total.

However, Will Young, who slammed seven fours and two sixes, took the offensive position this time. Young nevertheless kept the bounds on the flat Hyderabad surface, which was unlike Rachin Ravindra’s performance the other day.

Young eventually reached his fifty-year mark in the twentieth over thanks to a drive for a single.

With Latham and Mitchell Santner shifting gears at the end of the innings, New Zealand hit 200 runs in the 36th over and needed just seven more to achieve 250.

Soon after New Zealand passed 250 in the 43rd over, Latham reached his fifty. A staggering 84 runs were scored in the final 10 overs of New Zealand’s innings, despite the fact that they had lost four wickets.

Mitchell Santner oozes class against the Dutch in the ICC CWC 2023

The pressure of trying to catch a 300-plus total quickly caught up with the Dutch. They needed 323 runs to win, and as they slowly and steadily crumbled under the weight of chasing such a high total. a collapse that Mitchell Santner contributed to in some way.

After scoring a crucial unbeaten 36, Santner swiftly switched to bowling all 10 overs and picking up five wickets. Despite Colin Ackermann’s heroic half-century (69) and Scott Edwards’ knock of 30, the rest of the Dutch hitters struggled mightily.

Mitchell Santner, who entered the attack in the ninth over, caused half of the damage. Santner took his first wicket in the 11th over, just two overs later, when he knocked Max O’ Dowd leg before wicket.

Van der Merwe of the Netherlands was likely their last chance to revive their chances, but the former South Africa player was taken out by a reverse sweep, giving Matt Henry at point the chance to make a catch. That was Santner’s fourth wicket, and five overs later, in the 42nd, when Ryan Klein got out LBW, Santner finished off his five-fer.

The Dutch finally suffered their second straight loss after being bowled out for 223 in 46.3 overs.

In all respects, New Zealand’s performance was flawless, and it served as something of a morale lift as they prepare for tougher obstacles in the World Cup.
