IND vs SA 2nd Test: Record breaks as 23 wickets fall on the first day of Test in Cape Town

IND vs SA 2nd Test series began on January 03 and is going on in the Newlands Cricket Ground, Cape Town. South Africa won the toss and chose to bat first. The Cape Town pitch saw its first fall of wicket when Mohammad Siraj opened his spell and Aiden Markram got out by scoring 2 runs as the bowl was caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal. With only two players scoring in double digits and one with a Duck out, the South African team collapsed without putting a huge score on the scoreboard. South Africa only managed to score 55/10 in 23.2 overs.

Indian Cricket Team was all set to score a big run inning to secure their return after losing the first Test series. But the South African bowlers gave a tough competition to ICT as they managed to send the Indian Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal back into the dressing room without scoring a run.

Rohit Sharma along side with Shubman Gill managed to hold the partnership before a yet another shock for Indian Team came in the form of a wicket as Rohit Sharma lost his wicket against Nandre Burger after scoring 39 runs leaving the team at 72/2 in 14.2 overs. With Rohit Sharma returning, Virat Kohli came to the pitch to hold the batting order of the team. But within the partnership of 33 runs, Shubman Gill lost his wicket in 20.6 overs scoring 36 runs.

India leads by 98 runs

The later destruction began when Shreyas Iyer also got a duck out in 22.2 overs. Lungi Ngidi replaced Marco Jansen and with K L Rahul managing to score only 8 runs, India stood with 153/5 in 33.1 overs.   But the 33th and 34th over proved as a nightmare for the ICT as the next 5 wickets fell back to back without scoring a single in Kagiso Rabada’s and Lungi Ngidi’s spell. With 5 caught out and one run out of Mohammad Siraj, India managed to score 153/10 in 34.5 overs.

At the end of India’s first innings, India was leading by 98 runs when South Africa came to bat for its second inning on the first day itself. SA skipper Dean Elgar gave South Africa’s first wicket in the second inning and returned to the pavilion after scoring 12 runs in 28 runs.

Virat Kohli appealed to the crowd to not celebrate his wicket and hugged him as this was the last Test match of his career as he announced retirement before the series. T de Zorzi only managed to score 1 run in 7 balls before his caught out behind the stumps by K L Rahul in Mukesh Kumar’s spell. Aiden Markram managed to score runs while T. Stubbs was securing the wicket for the next two overs when Bumrah’s fast-paced ball sent T. Stubbs back into the dressing room after scoring a single. South Africa lost its 3rd wicket in 15.2 overs.

SA scores 62/3 in 17 overs before stumps

This made a dramatic record-breaking fall of 23 wickets within a single day of a Test match series. At this point South Africa managed to score 45/3 in 15.2 overs. At the 17th over with South Africa scoring 62/3, The day was called off.  The inning will continue today with South Africa trying to hold onto its wickets and surpass the opponent’s lead by scoring a high run target while the Indian Tigers will try to stop their proteas contenders.

The second day of 2nd Test Match Series will begin at 1:30 pm IST and the live streaming is free on Star Sports Network and Hotstar for Android users.
