Iran has claimed this attack to be an act of retaliation since Israel attacked on it’s consulate located in Damascus, Syria. The attack took place on 1st April leading to 13 deaths which included two members of high rank of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Ninety- nine percent of the rockets were intercepted by Israel’s exceptional Air Defense mechanism. Why this sudden attack? What’s the background to the ongoing massacre? BACKGROUND TO THE ONGOING MASSACRE- IRAN ISRAEL CONFLICTS

1979 islamic revolution

Israel and Iran were allies in the past, so how did they get here?  1979 Islamic revolution is considered the changing point of their amiable relationship. Before 1979 under the rule of the Pahlavis, both countries were allies, infact Iran was the country to recognise Israel after it was founded in 1948. Since then, Iran seeks the eradication of Israel. Israel believes that Iran is a threat to them as it’s proxy forces include Lebanese shia militant group that are sworn to it’s destruction. Iran was a member of the special committee formed by Un to decide the fate of Palestine after British control ended.

UN initially drafted a plan where it stated that Palestine should be divided on the basis of ethnicity, Arabs and Jews. However, Iran alongside India and Yugoslovia put forward an alternative plan to keep Palestine as one state but divide it into Arab and Jewish cantons. Israel somehow managed to capture more territory than the UN had approved following the Arab Israeli war of 1948. At the end of the war Israel became the second muslim majority nation, leading to ethnic cleansing of Zionists. Israel justified this act by stating that it was necessary as iran’s assets needed to be saved in Palestine.

However, the “periphery doctrine” also comes into picture. What’s the periphery doctrine? Then PM of Israel pursued relations with non- Arab states at the edges of the middle East to end its “isolation.” Iran was a major oil exporter to Israel and Israel was a major weapon exporter to Iran. As the aftermath of the Islamic Revolution, 1979, Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown. Israel was taken over by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He brought up a worldview which championised islam and wanted to stand up against the arrogant world powers including those who would oppress the Palestinians.

This was followed by Tehran (the capital of Iran) cutting off all ties with Israel, flight routes were blocked and majorly, the Israeli embassy in Tehran was changed into a Palestinian embassy. This was the peak turning point of Iran- Israel embassy. However, it is also believed that their relation have not been limited to ideological conflicts only. Iran- Israel have had disagreements over nuclear power as well.  There have been many attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities which Israel was blamed upon.

Middle East has always been a vulnerable area situated amidst the burning politics, any kind of conflict is expected to escalate into the height of a war. If the conflict escalates into a further full scale war there would be no winner since a conflict sees no foreseeable closure. The economy will have ruthless impact as it is already stressed by the COVID 19 pandemic and Israel- Palestine war, It may even pave the way for a third world war if not acted upon sensibly. Escalating conflicts between Israel and Iran must be handled diplomatically.

INDIA’S TAKE ON IT

India emphasises on avoiding a full fledged war and maintaining a diplomatic relation. According to India war does no good to either of the parties instead it creates loopholes in both the systems. India even imported oil from Iran but in 2019 sanction were imposed due to which it stopped.

On the other hand, Israel is India’s strategic partner where they cooperate in fields of Defence, Security, Space, Counter terrorism, etc. Consequences of a war is pretty dire so one must handle the situation of a war diplomatically.https://www.inpactimes.com/credits-and-criticism-analysing-modi-government-since-2014/
